Give each role a job

One person works through an approved sample task while the other asks clarifying questions. The helper should avoid taking over the device or supplying polished text to copy. Halfway through, switch roles and use a different sample. The change reveals whether someone who completed the task can also explain its purpose to another person.

Debrief the help itself

Ask which question helped progress and which instruction caused confusion. Keep feedback about observable behaviour: speaking too quickly, skipping a prerequisite or assuming a label was understood. This is more useful than saying someone is a natural trainer. Partners can leave with one coaching habit to practise, making the session valuable even for participants already comfortable with the product.

Imagine this

Hypothetical programme scene

Hypothetically, a confident participant initially supplies every answer. When roles switch, they notice how frustrating rapid instructions feel. In the next round they ask the learner what the recipient needs, creating space for the learner's own decision.

Make it practical.
