Define the evidence
Group articles into cohorts based on publication period, purpose or format before comparing performance. A newly published guide has had less time to gain readers and references than an established resource. A specialist checklist may attract fewer visitors than a broad explainer while producing more relevant conversations. Decide which comparison answers the editorial question rather than placing every URL in one traffic ranking.
Make it operational
Use a consistent observation window where possible and record major distribution differences. An article promoted through an event should not be treated as if it received the same exposure as an unpromoted page. Review qualified enquiries, independent references and relevant search traffic together. Keep small samples visible rather than reporting dramatic percentage changes without counts. Use the comparison to identify what deserves another test or improvement, not to declare a permanent winner from a brief early result.
Hypothetical example
A journal compares the first month of three operational checklists rather than comparing them with its oldest homepage. It notes that one received partner distribution and another did not. The review produces a fairer decision about which format to develop next and which page needs better distribution.
Make it practical.
