Start with your essential merchants
Write down the ten merchants or spending situations that would cause genuine inconvenience if payment failed. Include subscriptions, travel, work equipment and local purchases where relevant. Send that list to the proposed issuer and ask about restrictions, card type and supported transaction channels. Record confirmed answers separately from assumptions. A reassuring general statement about global usage is less helpful than an answer about your own essential purchase.
Prepare a useful trial record
For permitted trials, retain merchant name, country, purchase channel, currency and time. Avoid repeatedly retrying the same failed transaction without guidance. Ask support what information helps investigate a decline and what should never be shared. Evaluate the recovery process as part of acceptance: a card that works for your routine and explains exceptions clearly may be more useful than one with a broader but untested marketing claim.
Hypothetical example
A hypothetical sales manager needs flights, a conference hotel and an advertising subscription. The team verifies each category before the trip. One booking requires a different payment arrangement, so they resolve it in advance instead of discovering the limitation at the reception desk after arrival.
