Decide ownership early
Clarify which accounts, profile addresses and published materials are company-managed and which belong to the individual. Do this during setup rather than at departure. Document who can change access and what should happen to public links. A former employee’s profile should not silently remain presented as an active company representative. The appropriate transition depends on the account arrangement and the agreed working relationship.
Handle the public destination
Review printed cards, shared links and downloadable contact details that may still circulate. Where the platform and permissions allow, replace outdated company information with a clear, appropriate destination. Remove unnecessary access and verify the change. Preserve business records through the organisation’s established processes rather than relying on an abandoned profile account. Communicate responsibility to the team so future enquiries are handled coherently.
Hypothetical example
A hypothetical employee leaves a sales role. The company updates its managed profile to direct business enquiries to the team, removes account access and checks that old links no longer imply the person still works there. The individual’s separately owned professional profile remains their own.
Make it practical.
