Specify the relationship you need
Describe the type of person, the reason for the conversation and the stage of your project. A vague request to connect with influential people gives the recipient little basis for judgement. Explain why the introduction might be relevant to the other party, not only what you hope to gain. Accept that your contact may not know someone suitable or may prefer not to introduce you.
Provide a forwardable note
Prepare a short introduction that contains no confidential information and stands alone without additional editing. Include an accurate profile link and one relevant proof point. Keep the requested next step modest and clear. Do not ask your contact to exaggerate your achievements or imply personal endorsement beyond their knowledge. A useful request protects the intermediary’s reputation as well as your own.
Hypothetical example
A hypothetical founder asks for an introduction to someone responsible for employee onboarding at a multi-site business. The note explains the workflow question they want to discuss and links to a short product overview. It avoids asking the intermediary to describe the product as proven when they have not evaluated it.
Make it practical.
