Define the activation event carefully

Choose an event that reflects a genuine customer outcome, such as completing an intended supported payment journey, rather than merely downloading an app. Keep onboarding completion, first activity and repeat activity separate. Record the timeframe and customer segment. A platform can attract attention without yet proving that people understand the service or use it regularly, so the operating dashboard should show where users encounter friction between initial interest and practical value.

Connect marketing cost to observed behaviour

Compare acquisition expenditure with qualified, eligible customers and the activity actually observed in the cohort. Avoid projecting a full year of usage from a few early transactions without labelling the assumption. Ask what support effort was required and whether the trial represents the wider audience. This makes growth decisions more grounded: the team can improve the part of the journey that is weak before purchasing more traffic and creating a larger version of the same onboarding or usage problem.

Imagine this

Hypothetical example

A hypothetical campaign produces many registrations but few completed first payments. The team investigates onboarding questions and supported-use clarity before increasing spend. Its next campaign measures eligible active users, giving management a more useful signal than celebrating the registration total while the practical adoption issue remains unresolved.

Make it practical.
