Prioritise recognisability

Use an image that still resembles your current appearance and reads clearly at a small size. A dramatic campaign photograph may work beautifully on a brand homepage yet become confusing when cropped into a contact avatar. Examine the actual crop rather than only the original file. Your face should remain visible and your expression appropriate to the kind of relationship you want to start. Avoid visual effects that make recognition harder.

Use the photograph consistently

A consistent portrait across your profile, meeting invitation and professional channels can help someone confirm they found the right person. Consistency does not require freezing your identity indefinitely: replace old versions when necessary and update the most visible destinations together. Keep an original high-quality asset and approved crops. If a team supplies portraits, document how images are selected and how an employee can request a replacement.

Imagine this

Hypothetical example

In a hypothetical networking dinner, someone remembers a founder with glasses but opens a profile showing a heavily stylised image without them. Updating the profile to a current portrait removes an avoidable moment of uncertainty. The wider campaign can still retain its artistic photography.

Make it practical.
